Finding karaoke in Metro Manila is as easy as keeping your ear senses sharp. Some street corners and open sidewalks have a karaoke machine. Anyone with a 5-peso coin can easily sing to his or her heart’s content. On the other hand, some karaoke parties occur indoors. In KTV joints, some party tracks have become party staples. And so, we list down 10 of the commonly sung tracks to keep the party lively.
10. Touch by Touch by Joy
Touch by Touch is one of the songs heard in a karaoke in Metro Manila. Either you already knew the title. Or you have heard it without even knowing the title. Yes, it’s one of those songs. Upbeat enough to get the night kicking on high gear.
9. Out of Reach by Gabrielle
“So confused. My heart’s bruised. Was I ever loved by you?” For a sad song, Out of Reach has a rather upbeat tempo. It must have been the beats that gets your shoulders going up and down. Listening can get you swaying to the tune in no time in a karaoke in Metro Manila.
8. Build Me Up Buttercup by The Foundations
Partying while getting to sing at the time. Build Me Up Buttercup by The Foundations enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. It was when the film There’s Something About Mary was released in the 90’s. Among the top picks for hanging around a karaoke in Metro Manila. Tis is one of the most common pick-me-uppers in a karaoke party.
7. Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
You’ve seen it performed on The Voice of the Philippines. You’ve seen it performed on Asia’s Got Talent. And chances are you’ve seen it performed in any karaoke in Metro Manila. Even the not-so-brave has dared sing this Bonnie Tyler original. The latter then blames alcohol for the sudden courage to sing a belting song. It’s a good song to cajole your friends into singing on the next karaoke party after a lost bet. That’s an alibi easier to explain.
6. Believe by Cher
One of the first songs given the Auto-Tune treatment also served as one of the best pick-me-uppers this side of karaoke in Metro Manila. Snap out of it! Long before Cher made a cameo on Will and Grace, you may have been trying to imitate even the Auto-Tuned parts. At the risk of sounding like a robot yourself as this clip showed. It doesn’t make Believe by Cher any less of a fun song to dance around. Techno beats meet ballroom swing in this instant karaoke classic.
5. Dancing Queen by Abba
Those who can’t be dancing queens end up becoming karaoke queens. Or kings. Whatever floats your boat. A karaoke in Metro Manila meant having an opportunity to see someone singing Dancing Queen by Abba. In karaoke parties confined behind walls, everyone ends up dancing along with the singer. This sound is what made Abba distinct from the Bee Gees during the disco days. Their advantage against Bee Gees? This song. Not everyone may know Abba. But everyone is familiar with Dancing Queen as a karaoke classic.
4. It’s Raining Men by Weather Girls
The most honest song perhaps about women enjoying several men at the same time. In most parties in a karaoke in Metro Manila. The spoken parts at the beginning are skipped. Partiers then sing straight to “Humidity is rising”. It was one time included in the Bridget Jones’ Diary original soundtrack as a cover by Geri Halliwell. But most fans are now familiar with this song as one of the dance numbers in Magic Mike. How fitting! Start wondering if some karaoke parties have followed suit. (Nothing is “bawal” in iChill Theater Cafe anyway)
3. Remember My Name by Irene Cara
Also known as “Remember My Name! (Fame!)” by Irene Cara. Some guests only get to sing this in a karaoke in Metro Manila once tipsy. Tipsy enough to gather courage to sing. But not too drunk that they end up eating the lyrics. It takes some serious pipes to belt out the notes at the chorus much like the other songs in this list. Not too fast as well. It gives singers the freedom to dance along to the song.
2. I Love The Nightlife by Alicia Bridges
“Ooh ooh ooh ooh Ahh I love the nightlife” then kick your heels up the air! Let loose in one of the most memorable songs to come out of the original soundtrack of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The deceptively easy song found in a typical karaoke in Metro Manila is less about belting out and more about strutting the attitude. Again, the concept of being tipsy enough to muster courage as opposed to being drunk and eating the words. Project! Project! And project even more!
1. I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor
Why attend parties like a karaoke in Metro Manila? To forget. Singing songs like Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive will lessen incidents of tipsy/drunk women crying after drinking one too many. Sounds familiar? They don’t have to be the ones singing I Will Survive. Singing it to them would be recommended though. It will get them thinking that they will survive. Whatever that crisis may be.
