After earning critical acclaim in its run at DITO Bahay ng Sining in Marikina, Ikarus Productions’ “Hamlet – Theater Play in Manila” now goes to iChill Theater Cafe. Shakespearean play enthusiasts are surely in for a treat.
Billed as one of the toughest roles ever conceptualized onstage, Hamlet is about the prince pushed to the edge of sanity upon seeing his mother, Gertrude, marry his uncle, Claudius, shortly after his father, King Hamlet, died. It made him suspicious of the couple regarding the real reason behind his father’s death. In the course of hanging on to whatever is left of his sanity, Hamlet then plotted revenge first by putting the couple in a compromising position and later, murder.

Director Jay Crisostomo IV shared on Fringe Manila the point of view he used in presenting Hamlet. “It is a story which must be told with the ferocity of its topic but with also the gentleness of its protagonist. Hamlet screams ‘Murther!’ but before that final scream was the million-billion struggles which comes from the meek heart of a boy.” In the course of mourning the loss of his father, he inadvertently pushed the remaining parent away.
