Those spirits dwell in Spinoza Hotel. Director Biography – Robert David Duncan My core training in acting is from the Stella Adler Studio in New York. I love acting and filmmaking and Vancouver where I now live is a beautiful place to make films. I am interested in the dramas, delights, passions and heartbreaks that take place in everyday interactions (or lack thereof) between ordinary people. Most of my films have dealt with human-scale issues such as tough choices, love, dreams, hope and finding meaning and fun in life. I love an underdog story! My motto is don’t let anything get in the way of telling a story that might uplift someone – film it with your smartphone if that’s what you have, but get it done and share it with the world. Director Statement I’ve always been drawn to great spirits, the geniuses and mad people, thinkers and poets, heretics and rock stars, some living, many dead. I had an idea that perhaps mad genius is a form of substance, like an unseen blob of mercury, that floats around in space-time, touching down onto seemingly random people throughout history. What if all the touched ones continue to exist together in a separate plane, a place they colloquially refer to as Spinoza Hotel, a place where they rock and talk all night, sharing huge ideas and the pleasures of understanding one another? A young woman faces nightmarish visions and experiences at night when trying to overcome her Sleep Paralysis. Director Biography – RJ Maurer Starting on a Hi8mm camcorder given to him by his father, RJ has had an interest in filmmaking since he was a kid. RJ making films in High School and this influenced his decision to join the Combat Camera when he enlisted in the Marine Corps. RJ served 5 years in the Marine Corps and has been using the skills he has acquired through his time when making low budget indie films as well as the skills he acquired in the Marines shooting on the go. Recently RJ has continued directing and collaborating on films with his production company Trebor Media. Director Statement Telling stories has been something that’s been so close to my heart since I was a kid. I love making people feel things or see things another way. In the case of ‘Sleep Paralysis,’ it is based primarily on my own experiences, but hopefully, you take something from it and still have a good time. Congratulations Queer Transnational Love in the time of Social Media and Globalization Winner for best LGBT at iChill Manila Int Film Fest! In this video study, the filmmaker analyzes the possibilities and unsustainability of queer, transnational love for hybridized Filipino/American subjects. Using found footage, he retraces the story of his love with the research subject in an effort to work through the trauma of ending a relationship, all the while revealing the larger socio-political structures in place that are keeping them from one another. Director Biography – Adrian Alarilla Adrian is a Seattle-based filmmaker, community organizer, and film scholar. He is currently pursuing his graduate studies at UW’s Jackson School of International Studies, focusing on Southeast Asian Cinema. He also helps organize the Seattle Asian American Film Festival and the Diwa Filipino Film Festival of Seattle. This is a story of an aging actor who came to the small booth where the computer directs his monologue reading. This is the only place he can act. BIOFILMOGRAPHY Sergey Vlasov was born in Moscow in 1984. Moved to Israel in 1999. BFA in Filmmaking Department of Tel Aviv University. He finished his first short film named “Jam” in 2011. His second film is a graduation project called “Typist”, filmed in 2013, was screened at 45 international film festivals and won 5 prizes.   Congrats and until next festival!
